Can you make your digital events more sustainable?
Can you make your digital event more sustainable? 💻
Digital events tick most of the environmentally-friendly boxes, right? No carbon footprint, no wasted paper on print outs, reduced energy use (those conference centres just gobble up electricity). 💡
But. (And it’s a big but). IS there a way you can make your digital events even more sustainable? 🍂
We’ve scoured the web and asked the experts, and it turns out there are a few tiny things you can do to make a difference.
1) Compress files 💼
Huge uploads use more bandwidth. And more bandwidth means more emissions. By compressing files like PDFs and videos you’ll reduce your environmental impact, ever so slightly.
2) Ask attendees to turn their cameras off 📷
For exactly the same reasons as before. The harder your internet connection is working, the more emissions it’s, err, emitting.
3) Streamline your planning process 📝
All the pre-pre-pre-event planning video calls use a whole heap of energy too. By reducing the number of meetings you have, and only inviting people who really need to be there, you’re doing your bit for the planet. Hurrah!
4) Make your event mobile friendly 📞
The smaller the screen, the smaller the… yep, you get the idea. Reduced energy output. People might feel funny about using their tablets or mobiles, but they’re perfectly fine to use for shorter events, so there’s no harm in suggesting they make the switch!
5) Plant a tree!🌲
Ok - hear us out on this one. Think about asking attendees (or the companies they work for) to make a small contribution to a positive planet movement you support. Remind them of the costs they’ve saved on travel, coffees and lunches, and suggest they donate just a fraction of that to a great cause.
