We caught up with Vogue Business contributing editor, Senior content editor at the FT and Sound Advice: Entrepreneurs Unfiltered podcast host, Kate Bassett to hear what it really takes.
How and/or why did you get your first job in writing?
I decided I wanted to become a journalist when I was in my late teens and studying English Literature at uni. A careers adviser told me to do work experience to get my foot in the door and build up contacts in the industry. I did a two-week placement on a business mag – and ended up with a full-time job there. It was a small publishing company so I was given lots of responsibility early on. I learned by doing and saying ‘yes’ to every opportunity that came my way, even when I felt completely out of my depth.
What do you think makes a good writer?
Be punchy. Avoid jargon. Don’t be boring.
How was your role affected during Covid-19?
I was made redundant during the first lockdown. It felt like a kick in the teeth at the time but it has been a blessing in disguise. Now, as a freelancer, I work for companies including the Financial Times, Vogue Business and Channel 4. I get to pick and choose projects, set my own schedule, and be my own boss.
