How to land your dream guest speaker

Got a dream guest speaker in mind for your up-coming event?

Here’s our step-by-step guide to presenting them with an offer they can’t refuse.

1. GET THEIR NAME RIGHT
If you go wrong here it’s game over. Is it Jeff with a J or Geoff with a G? Should you be putting a Dr, Sir, Lady or Prince (hey, aim high!) as their title? Or do they have any awards that follow? Do your research to make sure they read on.

2. INTRODUCE YOURSELF
It’s good to add some personal touches to help them connect with you. Mention any shared interests or experiences, as well as any friends or colleagues you have in common.

3. TALK ABOUT THE EVENT
Whether it’s a cause they’re passionate about or an area they’re an expert in, now’s your moment to get them on board. Talk about all the brilliant stuff you’re doing to make your event stand out, who your audience is, and how much media attention you expect to generate. If you’ve secured other speakers now’s the time to mention them.

4. FLATTER THEM
Make sure you explain how their amazing experience or knowledge actually links to your event though, and talk about how much your audience would love to hear from them. If you’ve seen them speaking at any events before reference it here - it shows your know your stuff.

5. GIVE THEM THE DETAILS (BUT NOT THE GORY ONES)
Include key information they’ll definitely want to know but don’t go into minute detail just yet. Getting the basic info out there will save you loads of back-and-forth emails and help them make a quicker decision. If there’s flexibility (in terms of days, times, set-up, etc) let them know.

6. AVOID THE LONG GOODBYE
You’ve said your piece. Make your sign-off light and cheerful, and include a couple of alternative contact details, like your phone number and social handles.

7. FOLLOW-UP
Getting back to you might be right at the bottom of their to-do list, so a friendly nudge is a helpful reminder. Keep it short and ask them if they’d prefer to schedule a quick call or Zoom chat if it’s easier.

We’re confident your requests will be a success if you follow these simple steps!
