Five skills you need to work in events

The events’ industry can be a total whirlwind!

One minute you’re getting a huge buzz from delivering a successful event for a super corporate client - the next, you’re feeling the pressure because the caterer’s have gone MIA and you’ve got a conference room full of hungry delegates…

One thing’s for sure, to survive in this industry you’ve got to keep your cool. Remain totally unflappable even when everything is, errr, flapping right in your face.

But what else makes an event management superstar? Here are the key skills we think you need to succeed:

1.    ORGANISATION

Like, super organised. We’re talking weeks, months, even years of advance planning for major events. You’ll need to be able to keep on top of deadlines, know your network and remember approximately twenty-million different things all at once. Easy huh?

2.    PEOPLE PERSON

Events are primarily about connecting people. As the show-runner, you’re going to need to be able to demonstrate some exceptional people skills, impressing high-profile guests, CEOs of international companies, and hundreds upon hundreds of visitors and delegates. Not a people-person? This industry probably isn’t for you.

3.    CREATIVITY

Marketing and events professionals need to have a knack for creativity in a practical, problem-solving sense, as well as having an eye for aesthetics and design. If you’re bursting with big ideas (and think you can pull them off), you’ll be grand!

4.    KEEP IT REAL

That said, you will need to manage people’s expectations (not to mention their budgets). You’ll need to have a realistic head on you, to understand what’s doable and what’s not.

5.    FIRE IN YOUR BELLY

Most of all, to do well in the marketing and events world you need to have a passion for it. Events can be tough, but they can also be the most fulfilling, rewarding experiences to be part of too. There’s nothing quite like delivering your first big event - and reveling in the success!
