Q&A with Robert Jay

It helps to be curious when you’re working in marketing and events, and we love finding out more about people’s backgrounds and experiences.

Today, we’re sharing a quick Q&A with Robert Jay, Executive Director at Southbank Investment Research. We’ll find out a bit more about how he got where he is today, as well as learning about some of the work he’s been involved with.

First off… how did you get your first job in marketing?

My grandma found my first job for me, after seeing an advert in a local paper! I looked after all the subscriptions and promotions for what was a print-only paper at the time.

What do you enjoy working on most in the marketing world?

The first five years of my career was purely subscription marketing and I’ve always had a keen interest in marketing technology. But you can’t beat the excitement and anticipation of a new launch or event! I’ve managed many website launches, as publications became web-first, which is crazy to think about now.

What makes a good marketeer?

Curiosity. The need to find out why and the desire to improve it.

Tell us about an experience you’re really proud of…

Joining a new company at the start of the pandemic and building a new team remotely was tough. But we managed to launch an innovative new martech product - Lead Monitor - which was hugely successful. It was hard work but very fulfilling!

Is there anyone you admire in the industry?

I’m a big fan of Gary Vaynerchuck. I always tell my team to follow him! Not just for his social strategy, business ideas and marketing, but also the message he puts out around kindness, empathy and happiness in business. He’s always focused on trying to add value to his community.
