Our top tips for planning your escape and making the most of your time off

Before we head full steam into another busy events season packed full of events we managed to take a breath and long weekend last week. As summer comes to a close (sob!) we’ve been reflecting on what it really means to take a break.

Whether you want to take some time out to recharge, catch-up with family and friends, or seek high-octane thrills on an adventure of a lifetime, it can be hard to switch off. We’ve done some digging to find out what it really takes to relax.

1. TIMING IS EVERYTHING
It sounds obvious, but if you really, really want to relax, choose your holiday carefully. Five days in the sun a week before an annual conference? Terrible idea. Plan ahead and pick dates that are quieter than usual so you don’t end up answering emails from the other side of the world.

2. ARRANGE COVER
If you’re running your own business, it’s vital that you hand over the reigns (temporarily, of course) to someone you trust. It’s easy to think ‘Oh, the odd call here won’t do any harm’, but one call can quickly turn into back-to-back meetings on the beach. Virtual Assistants are a great way of providing extra support on a flexible basis!

3. MANAGE EXPECTATIONS
Start to let clients know you’re going to be off a few weeks ahead of schedule. It will give them time to fast-track any urgent requests, as well as subtly letting them know you’re taking your time off seriously. And when it comes to your Out of Office - say it loud and say it proud! Make it clear that you will absolutely NOT be available because you’re enjoying a break that you bloomin’ well deserve!

4. SWITCH OFF SOCIALS
Most of us have intertwined our personal social media accounts with our work or business accounts now too. So even with the best intentions, you might find yourself checking. If you can, use your time off to check out of social media completely (you’ll feel heaps better for it - we promise).

5. KNOW THYSELF
All said and done, only you know yourself and whether you’re able to log-off completely. Try to limit any work check ins to specific times of the day.
